Pat is gone... now what?
Pat arrives in 2021, February I think I remember, although he was appointed in January.
He arrives in the middle of the 14++++++ disaster (7 generations if I'm not mistaken) and is forced to embrace the 10nm (Intel 7) which is obsolete by that date since TSMC already has N5 (Apple M1 N5 2020) and the N4 would not take long to arrive.
The blow before he arrived from Apple left Intel seriously wounded in my opinion.
Pat also finds himself with a debt of more than $35B. Wind in its sails.

But there is also one of the largest interest rate hikes by the FED and ECB that will make it pay much more for its interests.
Despite all the investment it is going to make in 3 years it manages to contain the debt from 35B to 50B and stay afloat.
It proposes 5 nodes in 4 years, jumping for the first time to EUV if I'm not mistaken: 10nm (Intel 7), 7nm (Intel 4), 7nm+ (Intel 3), 5nm (Intel 20A) and 5nm+ (18A).
It gets more than that in my opinion, yes.
It gets Intel 7, 4 and 3 but it also launches a strategy that should have started earlier: using TSMC.
If you can't beat your enemy, join him. Sun Tzu would agree with me (A dual strategy that should have started to be used as soon as it came in my opinion for mobile chips at least).
So in addition to using 3 own nodes, add N7 for Gaudi 2, N6 for Alchemist, N5 for Gaudi 3 and Battlemage, plus IODs and iGPUs as well as N3B for Lunar and Arrow. Without that strategy Intel would be dead I think.
There is talk of the reasons for Pat's "retirement". Some say that the board wants to make the investments profitable now and others say that Pat wants to continue investing and developing. I don't know but I do know something.
One day before presenting Battlemage, one of the brand's star products, seeing the disastrous launch of Arrow due to performance and quantity of stock, you cannot generate discord with a sudden and senseless "retirement".
One day before presenting a product you cannot be left without a CEO and not have a quasi-instant "replacement". You are telling the investor that you had no plan B. In life you must have a plan B, C, H and J if necessary. In a company you must have the whole alphabet.
The consumer is receiving negative information in the middle of the Christmas campaign. The CEO of the product you wanted to buy has just been fired. Do Arrow, Lunar and Battlemage have stability problems like gen 13 and 14?
Less than a month before the end of the financial quarter and in the middle of the Christmas campaign you cannot do this. It is absurdly regrettable and clumsy. And by the way, Intel's Gaming area has been criticized for the presentation of a product that they have spent a lot of time and effort working on. A product that saves your ass to a large extent.
And now what?
Everything is going to go well although not as well as it should or could go. Intel is USA. USA cannot afford to see Intel fall. And although he is not going to pamper her anymore (the move to buy back shares with funds from the Chip Act did not go down very well, in addition to the investment restriction in Ohio, surely) he is not going to expel her from the class. But every move is going to be scrutinized.
David and Naga's intervention at UBS seemed to me to be very improvable, with basic errors of expression that cannot be allowed, in my opinion, at this level. Clarity and firmness. Hesitating or nuancing in an impulsive manner implies nervousness or falsehood. Beating around the bush.
Now they will want to make 18A profitable. If the information from Bionic S. is correct, those 55mm2 per Tile in CWF should help to have a high Yield and even higher in Wildcat if the combination is 2p+4lpe of the Compute Tile and surely also high in 4+8+4 versions of PTL.
Marketing is the tool that allows you to sell more with the same product. Intel will debut GAAFET and Back Side Power Delivery Network if no one has lied. I don't know about you but I'm dying to try the first laptop (or smartphone? a wild, wild sCATphone? xD) processor that combines 18A, PowerVIA and RibbonFET giving not only a battery life never seen before in computers but also unprecedented power CPU/NPU(iGAUDI3?)/iGPU (Celestial).
They will make 18A profitable and invest less in 14A and beyond. 18A will surely be the new 14++++++.
The next CEO will be the good guy in the coming years, launching the star products that took Pat almost 4 years to structure.
But by "retiring" Pat they don't really know what they have unintentionally turned him into...

Finally, a question than i've had since CWF was introduced. If Sierra Forest with 144 cores is in LGA 4710 (77.5x56.5) and Sierra Forest with 288 cores is in LGA 7528... How many cores will fit in Clearwater Forest in LGA 9324 if they have put 288 cores in CWF in a BGA size LGA4710?
Falcon Shores, Sierra Forest 288, Panther Lake, Horse Ridge & Chipmunk Ridge, OCI, Bixby Creek, Clearwater Forest, Diamond Rapids, Glass Substrate, Celestial, Druid,...
Pat in Intel is dead&(will)BACK :)
